Lammas is an ancient Celtic agricultural festival that celebrated the beginning of the harvest and is one of the Sabbats in traditional witchcraft. At this time the Irish Sun God, Lugh become human and the Celtic goddess Dana was venerated. Altars were decorated with fruit and candles were lit to encourage the magick of fertility.
Acknowledgement of the harvest deities at this time of year went beyond the Celtic world and universal myths connect with the same revering of nature. At this time the Egyptian Sun Goddess, Isis was born, the American Indians honored their Grandmother Corn and the ancient Romans celebrated Ceres, their harvest goddess.(Text by Australian Magick)
